The New Normal: An Ethical Revolution in Business

A revolution is underway. Is your compliance program ready?

At Convercent, we’ve talked for a long time about an ethical revolution in business. And we’re not the only ones—last year’s statement by the Business Roundtable was a high-profile moment in an ongoing conversation between consumers, companies, and communities.

There is a revolution underway, an exciting transformational revolution, that has the opportunity to completely, radically shift how our profession delivers value.

So at ECI’s IMPACT2020 conference in May, Jane Mitchell and I decided to present our thoughts on how this conversation is manifesting in business practices. We covered the changes we are seeing in how companies are operating, how an accountability culture is manifesting both within social media and within organizations, and, most importantly for this audience, how ethics and compliance programs have the opportunity to adapt to catch this wave and transform their role.

One benefit of presenting this topic at a virtual conference is that we were able to see the active commentary in the session chat stream. The passion and alignment that surfaced in the chat led us to conclude that one session at a virtual conference wasn’t nearly enough to do this subject justice. In the two months since ECI IMPACT2020, Jane and I have met on countless Zoom calls to evolve the ideas we presented.

The original idea was to write a paper. But with our passion for this topic, the idea of a paper has transformed into a short collection of articles, with the first going live today. The topic itself has grown from a discussion on our observations from the ECI session, to a rallying cry for the future of the ethics and compliance profession.

And because the chat during our session was so dynamic, we knew this series had to published in a forum that allowed for conversation with our peers in ethics and compliance. Fortunately, with the launch of the CONVERGE community, we’ve found a perfect home for this conversation.

In this new world, integrity is rewarded and misconduct is punished—and the court of public opinion moves swiftly. There is a revolution underway, an exciting transformational revolution, that has the opportunity to completely, radically shift how our profession delivers value.
