Scary but true: A study by the International Foundation for Protection Officers found that employee theft causes 33 percent of all business bankruptcies. Meanwhile, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates that 75 percent of employees have stolen from the workplace — and most do so repeatedly.

Surprised? Don’t be. The human capacity for on-the-job malfeasance spans centuries. Yet many companies today seem to pride themselves on maintaining strong ethics and behaving ethically — brandishing mission statements and codes of ethics –but what’s happening behind the scenes? Way more than you might think.

How does the disconnect between words and actions develop? We looked at recent survey data from a multitude of sources that shed light on bad behavior in business.
